/ Rich History & Royal Connections

The origins of St Alfege date back to 1012 AD, marking the sacred site where Alfege, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was martyred.
The church is deeply woven into the fabric of British history:

  • Royal Roots: King Henry VIII was baptized within these hallowed walls.
  • Famous Figures: The churchyard and crypt are the final resting places of notable historical figures, including General James Wolfe (the victor of Quebec) and the renowned Tudor composer Thomas Tallis.
  • Surviving Through Time: After the medieval structure tragically collapsed in 1710, the present magnificent building was constructed. Despite severe damage during the Blitz in World War II, the church was lovingly restored and rededicated in 1953.
